Diaper Derby Recap

If you read my original post leading up to the Diaper Derby, let me just say the cupcakes were delicious!

Ok, so that’s my silly way of trying to say that Baby Girl didn’t win. But also, the cupcakes from ShotCakes were actually very good!

As any racer knows, packet pick up can be significantly before the start time. Add onto that, racers were assigned to their heats (6 baby per heat) in order of arrival. We had a bunch of time on our hands! Baby Girl ended up in the 7th heat, which was 90 minutes after we arrived. We had plenty of time to wander the mall, read the rules they gave us, and check out the sponsors.

The rules were hilarious! To give you a brief sample of the 20-something rules (these aren’t direct quotes, but as best I can remember):

  1. No live pets are allowed at the finish line to entice racers
  2. Parents are not allowed to push their children along the course
  3. Parents are not allowed to push other children down or hold them back

Crazy that they had to tell us #3, right? One of my other favorite rules was that if after 5 minutes, no baby had crossed the finish line, they would declare the baby closest to the finish line the winner. That rule wasn’t used the entire time we were there. There was always one baby who was ready and raring to go!

Also in our 90 minutes to kill, we hit up all of the tables run by the sponsors. We enjoyed the cupcakes by ShotCakes, we got a goody bag including a rubber ducky from WIC, and we signed up for all sorts of raffles… because, well, we had time to kill! And we took a picture with a shoe:

Because New Balance was a sponsor... and why not? (That's my dad with me and Baby Girl)

That’s my dad with me and Baby Girl. I dressed her in a hot pink track suit because I thought it was funny, what do you think?

We also watched some of the other heats, but it was a little hard to see because there was such a big crowd. Whatever we could catch was adorable/funny though!

Now, Heat 7, how Baby Girl did:

There is Baby Girl in her little pink track suit in the yellow lane.

The cutie pie next to us in the red lane had very funny parents. The parents and all of their spectators came wearing matching home-designed shirts saying “Team [Baby’s name].” I can’t remember the baby’s name anymore. They had bananas drawn on the shirts too, so I’ll call them Team Bananas. It was funny. When I complimented the mom, who was sitting next to me, on the shirts, she said “Go big or go home, right?” I hope she was joking, it was a crawling race after all. She seemed silly though, so I’m going to guess it was at least partially a joke.

The cutie pie in the blue lane cried the entire race! She just laid on her tummy like she had been abandoned and wept. Poor girl! Her father was super friendly though and we had a nice chat.

The cutie pie in the orange lane won the heat! It took her awhile to figure out what was going on, but once she got moving, she was fast! In total, the race was under a minute long. It wasn’t even a close race.

The red and blue parents and I had a conversation about how the kids couldn’t see us. In order to see the finish line from the starting line, the babies had to stare into the sun. If I could suggest any changes, it would be to reverse the start and the finish lines. Plus, the DJ was blasting music right behind us so there was no hope of the babies hearing us. Team Bananas mom even brought a bunch of bells and it didn’t attract any of the babies. I don’t think they could even hear the bells.

And how did Baby Girl do? Well… she loved the starting line. Each lane had a laminated sheet of paper saying “Start.” Baby Girl handed it to her daddy 3 times during the race!

DiaperDerby Startline

All of the babies stayed at the starting line except the orange lane (winner) and the red lane (Team Bananas). The baby in the red lane crawled about a foot into the shadows and then stopped.

Baby Girl didn’t win the race, but I can’t really say she lost either. Since we spent so much time entering all of the raffles, we actually won two of them! Baby Girl won a gift certificate to Toys R Us thanks to Relay for Life! And I won any 1 pair of shoes I wanted from New Balance! Since all of the shoes were roughly the same price, I selected these:

NB Shoes

Cute, no? They are also super comfy. I can’t wait for spring to arrive so I can start wearing them! My dad suggested that I get new running shoes instead, but the selection in the store was really limited, so I chose shoes I could wear to work.

The Diaper Derby was free to enter, so all of the free goodies were an awesome upside to a fun event. All in all, we had a complete blast! It was a day of laughs and cheers and winning raffle prizes! I’m super glad we all went!

Baby’s First Race!

Ok, technically, her first race was this 5k. But, I’ve signed her up for her very first solo race! It’s a “diaper derby” at a (not so local) mall.

What’s a diaper derby? you ask.

It’s a crawling race. For this one, there will be 6 babies placed onto the track at a time and they have to crawl their way to a finish line. I have no idea what the distance will be though. I doubt very long. My mom relates it to a frog or turtle race. Who knows who will win, it’s a total crap-shoot; but hilarity will definitely ensue! Also, I heard a rumor (from the race registration woman) that this one is sponsored by Keurig so there will be free cupcakes and coffee for the spectators. 🙂

For this Diaper Derby, only 72 babies can register. Winners of each heat go on to compete in a semi-final round, etc. And the top 3 finishers win a trophy. How cute is that?

There are rules though, all registrants must be under 12 months old and if they stand up on the track, they are disqualified! No walking allowed!

Really, I see there being 3 scenarios that could play out for my kid:

  1. She’s awesome, has her eye on the prize, and crawls like the wind (would it be inappropriate for me to play “Eye of the Tiger” during the race? Hmm… probably. I guess I’ll just hum it to myself.)
  2. She cries as soon as she’s put on the track and refuses to move
  3. She wants to touch all of the other babies… in the face (for some reason she loves touching other babies’ faces – it’s so not appreciated by other moms…)

Can you think of any other scenarios?

I’m pretty sure if I could put one of the cats at the finish line, baby girl would be certain to win! Her top motivation for crawling is to chase the cats!

Prissy Pants hiding in a bag within a box... her dream come true!

Prissy Pants hiding in a bag within a box… pretty sure this is her dream come true!

Really, I signed her up because it sounds like something funny to do. (Also, both a friend and my mom egged me on…) She’s a fast little crawler when she wants to be though, so who knows? Maybe in March I’ll have pictures of our new trophy!

Or maybe I’ll just have pictures of the free cupcakes. That’s ok by me.

I just hope I don’t have pictures of a miserable, crying baby. Well, pictures of MY miserable, crying baby. I’m sure it will happen to someone, I just hope that someone isn’t me.

Saturday Morning Motivation – Shopping!

This morning I’m going to a giant consignment sale run by a mother’s organization. I hate shopping. Especially this type of shopping – where I want to make sure I’m finding something of good quality, but there are a ton of people, and it’s a limited amount of time, and there aren’t multiples of something – so if I like something I have to get it – and I really have to look! Ugh, stressful!

I’m on a quest to find some interesting things for the baby. She’s really paying attention to the world right now but she gets bored with things so quickly. She has an activity mat at our house and she’s already “over it!” So I’m looking for activity mats or chairs or exersaucers or bouncy seats or whatever will hold her attention, but for cheap because I’m sure she’ll check it out, figure it out, and want to move on in under a month!

Here’s my motivation for the day:

Not to have a hissy fit because the crowd is overwhelming

Keep a sense of humor

Don’t spend too much!

Find something fun for the baby!

Wish me luck!

Have a great weekend!

Peeping Tom Cat…?

I only talk about baby stuff lately… how monotonous! So I’m going to tell you a silly story about my cat instead (I’m not sure if that’s much better though…)

This is my little girl cat:

(Pictured here in a cape she made for herself out of a brown paper bag)

(Pictured here in a cape she made for herself out of a brown paper bag)

One of her nicknames is Prissy Pants, but she’s gotten much bolder since we moved. At our rental house, she usually wouldn’t go more than 50 feet from the back door. It was really rare to look for her out a window and not be able to see her in the yard.

I recently found out from our new neighbor, Ann, that Prissy Pants has been breaking onto Ann’s 3 season porch through a doggy door. Prissy Pants will prance around Ann’s porch just smelling all of Ann’s furniture and plants – paying no attention to Ann watching her through a glass door. Nor does Prissy Pants seem to care that Ann’s dachshund is barking at her as long as the glass is between them!

Granted, my little girl is still less than 50 feet away from our back door but jeez! (Because our back door faces sideways – right towards Ann’s back porch.)

Luckily, Ann seems to be a cat person and is finding the breaking and entering funny. I told her that Prissy Pants is so friendly that Ann could literally pick her up and throw her out of the house, but I get the impression that Ann would be happier to pick my little criminal up and cuddle her (which would also be totally fine with Prissy Pants!). Thank goodness she’s friendly!

Everyone else in the neighborhood owns a dog. I wonder how many other doggy doors Prissy Pants is planning to break into!

Baby Size or Diet Suggestion?

When I first found out I was pregnant, I was super excited to check out those baby size calculators online… Until I realized how BORING they are in the beginning!

Your baby is the size of:

  • a grain of rice
  • a peppercorn
  • a caper

Woo! Excitement!

So I stopped checking. Around Christmas, my absolutely adorable sister-in-law asked if I knew the size. And I didn’t and I felt a little bad for not knowing any of that type of stuff (I may have been a little detached in the beginning… or I was too busy planning puzzles to think about size)… so I started checking again. That first week I looked into it again, Booger was the size of a green pepper. Mmm… green pepper… The next week, Booger was the size of a mango… yummy… mango!

Seriously, all I wanted was a green pepper and a mango to eat! Which I vaguely feared made me a bad person (does it count as cannibalism?)… but mango is delicious! And then I started to notice a trend. These websites that talk about baby size never use any object besides food. Booger was never the size of a stapler, a golf ball, or a softball. However, Booger was the size of 3 limes one week and 4 oranges another. How am I supposed to configure them?! Oranges

Additionally, the food suggestions are always healthy! I was never carrying around a Twinkie, a cupcake, or a pie…

I’m on to you, baby websites! Clearly you are just trying to influence my eating!

(Um… it totally worked… but that’s besides the point!)

Thanksgiving – Vegie Humor

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

This is the little centerpiece at my parents house (my father is also a vegetarian). I warn them every year: someday, I shall kidnap it… if I ever do my own Thanksgiving meal. However, whether on their table or mine, it always cheers me up!

Give thanks!

(and yes, I was super upset the year I noticed his little broken toe!)

Vegie Humor – Zombies

One more post before Thanksgiving to make fun of vegetarians and cheer myself up!

Enjoy!
